Janamejaya asked: How did that eventful gambling match among the brothers take place, which caused so muc misery to my grandfathers, the Pāṇḍava-s?

के च तत्र सभास्तारा राजानो ब्रह्मवित्तम के चैनमन्वमोदन्त के चैनं प्रत्यषेधयन्
O you who are immersed in the brāhman! Who were the kings who were present in that sabhā? Who among them approved of the match and who did not?
हे ब्रह्म में लीन! उस सभा में कौन-कौन राजा उपस्थित थे? उनमें से किसने मैच को मंजूरी दी और किसने नहीं?
O brāhmaṇa! O supreme among brāhmaṇas! I wish to hear all this in detail, because this was the cause of the destruction of the world.
हे ब्राह्मण! हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! मैं यह सब विस्तार से सुनना चाहता हूं, क्योंकि यही संसार के विनाश का कारण था।
The sūta said: Having been thus addressed by the king, Vyāsa's powerful student, knowledgeable in all the Veda-s, recounted everything as it had happened.
सूत ने कहा: राजा द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, व्यास के शक्तिशाली छात्र, सभी वेदों के जानकार, ने सब कुछ वैसा ही बताया जैसा घटित हुआ था।

Vaiśampāyana said: O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! O great king! If you wish to hear it, then listen. I will tell you in detail what happened.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे भरत वंश में श्रेष्ठ! हे महान राजा! सुनना चाहते हो तो सुनो. मैं आपको विस्तार से बताऊंगा कि क्या हुआ.
Knowing Vidūra's views, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, again privately spoke these words to Duryodhana,
विदुर के विचार जानकर अंबिका के पुत्र धृतराष्ट्र ने एक बार फिर अकेले में दुर्योधन से ये बातें कहीं।

"O Gāndhārī's son! Forget the dice, Vidūra does not approve of it. The immensely intelligent one will not speak in vain.
"हे गांधारी के पुत्र! पासे को भूल जाओ, विदुर इसे स्वीकार नहीं करते। अत्यधिक बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति व्यर्थ नहीं बोलेगा।"

हितं हि परमं मन्ये विदुरो यत्प्रभाषते क्रियतां पुत्र तत्सर्वमेतन्मन्ये हितं तव
I think what Vidūra has said is for my supreme welfare. O son! Act accordingly, for I think that it will be for your welfare too.
मुझे लगता है कि विदुर ने जो कहा है वह मेरे परम कल्याण के लिए है। हे वत्स तदनुसार कार्य करो, क्योंकि मैं समझता हूं कि यह तुम्हारे कल्याण के लिए भी होगा।
Vidūra knows all the sacred texts, with their mysteries, that the illustrious and wise devarṣi Bṛhaspati, preceptor of Vāsava, taught to the intelligent king of the gods.
विदुर उन सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों को, उनके रहस्यों सहित जानते हैं, जिन्हें वासव के गुरु, प्रसिद्ध और बुद्धिमान देवर्षि बृहस्पति ने देवताओं के बुद्धिमान राजा को सिखाया था।
The intelligent Vidūra is considered as foremost among the Kuru-s, like the immensely wise Uddhava is acclaimed among the Vṛṣṇi-s.
बुद्धिमान विदुर को कुरु-वंशियों में सबसे अग्रणी माना जाता है, जैसे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान उद्धव वृष्णि-वंशियों के बीच प्रशंसित हैं।

O son! Dissension brings destruction to the kingdom, so give up the idea.

You have obtained what the supreme texts say are what a son should obtain from his father and mother. O son! You have obtained the rank of your father and grandfather.
आपने वह प्राप्त कर लिया है जो सर्वोच्च ग्रंथ कहते हैं कि एक पुत्र को अपने पिता और माता से प्राप्त करना चाहिए। हे वत्स तुम्हें अपने पिता और दादा का पद प्राप्त हुआ है।

अधीतवान्कृती शास्त्रे लालितः सततं गृहे भ्रातृज्येष्ठः स्थितो राज्ये विन्दसे किं न शोभनम्
You have studied, you have become learned in the sacred texts. You have always been reared at home. You are the eldest among your brothers and you have been established in the kingdom. Do you not consider this fortunate?
तुमने अध्ययन कर लिया है, तुम पवित्र ग्रंथों के विद्वान हो गये हो। आपका पालन-पोषण सदैव घर पर ही हुआ है। आप अपने भाइयों में सबसे बड़े हैं और राज्य में प्रतिष्ठित हैं। क्या आप इसे सौभाग्यशाली नहीं मानते?
You obtain the best of food and garments, unobtainable by other men. O mighty-armed one! O son! Having obtained this, why do you grieve?
तुम्हें अन्य मनुष्यों द्वारा अप्राप्य सर्वोत्तम भोजन और वस्त्र प्राप्त होते हैं। हे महाबाहु! हे वत्स इसे प्राप्त करके फिर तुम शोक क्यों करते हो?
O mighty-armed one! This great kingdom of your father and grandfather is prospering. When you rule it, you shine like the lord of the gods in heaven.
हे महाबाहु! आपके पिता और दादा का यह महान राज्य समृद्ध हो रहा है। जब आप इस पर शासन करते हैं, तो आप स्वर्ग में देवताओं के स्वामी की तरह चमकते हैं।
I know you to be wise. Then what is the reason for this grief? Why is your misery swelling up? Tell me."
मैं जानता हूं कि तुम बुद्धिमान हो। फिर इस दुःख का कारण क्या है? तुम्हारा दुःख क्यों बढ़ता जा रहा है? मुझे बताओ।"
Duryodhana replied: "I am an evil man that I eat and dress, despite what I see. It has been said that a man who does not feel envy is a wretch.
दुर्योधन ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं एक दुष्ट आदमी हूं, जो कुछ भी देखता हूं उसके बावजूद खाता और पहनता हूं। ऐसा कहा गया है कि जो व्यक्ति ईर्ष्या महसूस नहीं करता वह अधम होता है।"

O Indra among kings! O lord! This ordinary prosperity does not please me. I am miserable on seeing the blazing prosperity of Kuntī's son.
हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! हे भगवान! यह साधारण समृद्धि मुझे प्रसन्न नहीं करती। कुन्ती पुत्र की चमकती हुई समृद्धि को देखकर मैं दुःखी हूँ।

The entire earth is subject to Yudhiṣṭhira's suzerainty. I am telling you that I am miserable, since I am still established here, alive.
संपूर्ण पृथ्वी युधिष्ठिर के आधिपत्य के अधीन है। मैं आपको बता रहा हूं कि मैं दुखी हूं, क्योंकि मैं अभी भी यहां स्थापित हूं, जीवित हूं।
The Chaitrakis, the Kaukura-s, the Kāraskara-s and the Lohajaṅgha-s live in Yudhiṣṭhira's abode, like prostrate slaves.
चैत्रकी, कौकुर, करस्कर और लोहजंघा युधिष्ठिर के निवास में झुके हुए दासों की तरह रहते हैं।
The Himālaya-s, the oceans, the regions along the shores that produce all the gems and all others are inferior to Yudhiṣṭhira's abode.
हिमालय, समुद्र, तट के किनारे के क्षेत्र जो सभी रत्नों का उत्पादन करते हैं और अन्य सभी युधिष्ठिर के निवास से हीन हैं।
O lord of the earth! Since I was the eldest and foremost, Yudhiṣṭhira offered me homage and appointed me to the task of receiving the gems.
हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! चूँकि मैं सबसे बड़ा और अग्रणी था, इसलिए युधिष्ठिर ने मुझे प्रणाम किया और रत्न प्राप्त करने के कार्य पर मुझे नियुक्त किया।
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Of the riches that were brought there, supreme and invaluable, one could not see the near end, nor the far one.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जो धन वहाँ लाया गया था, वह सर्वोच्च और अमूल्य था, कोई भी निकट अंत नहीं देख सकता था, न ही दूर।

My hands were too tired to receive all those riches. When those who had brought riches from distant places had left, I was still tired.
मेरे हाथ उन सारी दौलत को पाने के लिए बहुत थक गए थे। जब दूर-दूर से धन-सम्पत्ति लानेवाले चले गये, तब भी मैं थका हुआ था।

कृतां बिन्दुसरोरत्नैर्मयेन स्फाटिकच्छदाम् अपश्यं नलिनीं पूर्णामुदकस्येव भारत
Having brought gems from Bindusarovar, Māyā constructed a platform of crystal. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing the place full of lotuses, I took it to be water.
बिन्दुसरोवर से रत्न लाकर माया ने स्फटिक का एक चबूतरा बनवाया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कमलों से परिपूर्ण स्थान देखकर मैंने उसे जल समझ लिया।
On seeing me draw up my clothes, Vṛkodara laughed at me. He thought me to be devoid of riches and deluded by the superior wealth of the enemy.
मुझे अपने कपड़े सँवारते देख वृकोदर मुझ पर हँसे। उसने मुझे धनहीन और शत्रु के श्रेष्ठ धन से भ्रमित समझा।

तत्र स्म यदि शक्तः स्यां पातयेयं वृकोदरम् सपत्नेनावहासो हि स मां दहति भारत
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Had I possessed the ability, I would have killed Vṛkodara there. The derision of a rival burns me.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यदि मुझमें क्षमता होती तो मैं वृकोदर को वहीं मार डालता। प्रतिद्वंद्वी का उपहास मुझे जला देता है।
O lord of men! I again saw a similar pond full of lotuses. Thinking it to be made out of crystal, I fell into the water.
हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! मैंने फिर वैसा ही कमलों से भरा तालाब देखा। यह सोचकर कि यह क्रिस्टल से बना है, मैं पानी में गिर गया।
At this, Kṛṣṇā and Pārtha laughed out loudly at me, and so did Draupadī and the other women. This pained my heart.
इस पर कृष्ण और पार्थ मुझ पर ज़ोर से हँसे, और द्रौपदी और अन्य स्त्रियाँ भी। इससे मेरे दिल को बहुत दुख हुआ.
My garments having become wet, the servants gave me others on the king's orders and this too made me more miserable.
मेरे वस्त्र गीले हो जाने के कारण राजा की आज्ञा से सेवकों ने मुझे दूसरे वस्त्र दे दिये, इससे भी मैं और अधिक दुखी हो गया।

प्रलम्भं च शृणुष्वान्यं गदतो मे नराधिप अद्वारेण विनिर्गच्छन्द्वारसंस्थानरूपिणा अभिहत्य शिलां भूयो ललाटेनास्मि विक्षतः
O lord of men! Listen when I tell you about another trick. In trying to go out through what looked like a door, but wasn't a door, I hit my head against a crystal slab and got hurt.
हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! सुनो जब मैं तुम्हें एक और तरकीब के बारे में बताता हूँ। जो दरवाज़ा जैसा दिखता था, लेकिन दरवाज़ा नहीं था, उससे बाहर निकलने की कोशिश में मेरा सिर एक क्रिस्टल स्लैब से टकरा गया और मुझे चोट लग गई।
Then, on seeing this from a distance, the twins were amused. In great sorrow, they held me in their arms.
फिर, दूर से यह देखकर जुड़वाँ बच्चे खुश हो गए। बड़े दुःख में उन्होंने मुझे अपनी बाँहों में पकड़ लिया।

उवाच सहदेवस्तु तत्र मां विस्मयन्निव इदं द्वारमितो गच्छ राजन्निति पुनः पुनः
Sahadeva then repeatedly told me, as if amazed, "O king! This is the door. Paś-s this way."
तब सहदेव ने मुझसे बार-बार कहा, मानो आश्चर्यचकित हो, "हे राजा! यह दरवाजा है। इस तरह से।"

नामधेयानि रत्नानां पुरस्तान्न श्रुतानि मे यानि दृष्टानि मे तस्यां मनस्तपति तच्च मे
I saw jewels there, whose names I had not even heard of earlier. That is the reason why my heart is burning."
मैंने वहां ऐसे आभूषण देखे, जिनका मैंने पहले नाम भी नहीं सुना था। यही कारण है कि मेरा हृदय जल रहा है।”
